We are certified to BS EN ISO 9001: 2015 and are accredited to a number of organisations such as Joscar.
Non-destructive Testing (NDT)
Non-destructive testing (NDT) blends quality assurance and materials science into a profession devoted to inspecting, testing, and evaluating materials, components, or assemblies. Using a set of test methods, technicians identify cracks, voids, inclusions, and weld discontinuities, as well as identify misassembled subcomponents, without destroying the serviceability of the part or system.
NDT is used to ensure product integrity and reliability, control manufacturing processes, lower production costs, and maintain a uniform quality level. Without it, the safety and reliability of components can be seriously jeopardized, leading to catastrophic failures such as airplane and locomotive crashes, pipeline leaks and explosions, nuclear reactor failures, and ships sinking.
Non-destructive testing methods
We provide a full suite of NDT methods, including, but not limited to:
- Radiographic testing (RT)
- Eddy current testing (ET)
- Liquid penetrant testing (LPI – fluorescent & colour) (LPI / PT)
- Magnetic particle inspection (MPI / MT)
- Dimensional inspection
- Visual inspection (VT)
- Ultrasonic testing and inspection services & thickness checks (UT)
- Weld inspection services
Industries that utilize NDT include:
- Maritime
- Manufacturing
- Energy (oil, gas and nuclear)
- Chemical
- Infrastructure (bridges, highways & buildings)
- Transportation (automotive & railways)
- Aerospace
- Construction
NDT techniques fall into two categories:
1. Techniques which only detect and size defects/damage present on the surface or near-surface of a component.
2. Techniques which can detect, and size defects/damage embodied within a component.
Extra steps are required in the development and application of the test to provide confidence in its ability to identify the damage or irregularities of concern. The Inspection Process and its proper Management are discussed in more detail below.
NDT is a primary recovery mechanism for errors in design, construction, and operational activities.
Correct selection and application of an NDT technique can provide confidence that a component or piece of the plant does not contain defects of the type which the technique was capable of detecting.
When applied in a manufacturing environment it is used to provide confidence that there are no defects of concern over a certain size which may have been introduced by the manufacturing process. In this case NDT is just one of a number of quality control activities aimed at producing a component or piece of plant to a particular specification.
